LIFE FROSTDEFEND

LIFE-FROSTDEFEND project aims to design, develop and demonstrate the benefits of a novel monitoring and frost forecasting tool to mitigate frost injury in high yield agriculture crops. More specifically the project aims to:

  • Design and develop a smart IoT-based system for monitoring selected atmospheric and agronomic parameters, forecasting frost events, and provide early warnings of adverse conditions.
  • Assess and predict the vulnerability and sensitivity of different types of fruit trees to frost events.
  • Develop and implement anticipated responses to frost events using sustainable techniques with low carbon footprint to reduce the epiphytic populations of ice nucleation active bacteria under a critical threshold.
  • Strengthening local capacities and provide guidelines about the best agricultural practices, technologies and support services, to reduce vulnerability and enhance resilience.
  • Demonstrate the entire effort to several agricultural areas with different geographical and climatic characteristics.
  • Develop the FROSTDEFEND Adaptation Plan to promote best available techniques and environmental practices.
  • Increase awareness among target groups and end-users towards climate responsible attitudes.

GSEU – A Geological Service for Europe: Coastal Vulnerability Assessment and Climate Change Adaptation

GSEU – A Geological Service for Europe, implemented under the initiative of the Association of European Geological Survey Organizations (EGS – EuroGeoSurveys), aims to establish a permanent and sustainable Geological Service for Europe through cooperation among national and regional geological surveys and the harmonisation of methods for the collection, processing and use of geoscientific data.

The project’s activities are structured into nine Work Packages (WP1–WP9), organized around five core thematic Areas of Expertise and a central axis dedicated to developing a unified European geological data network. Within this framework, the existing EGDI platform is upgraded and expanded to serve as a comprehensive European knowledge base.

The thematic areas address the critical geoscientific needs of the European Union and include:

  • Critical Raw Materials
  • GeoEnergy Resources
  • Groundwater Resources
  • Coast and Sea (Coastal Zone and Seabed)
  • Geological Framework and Geological Modelling

Through these thematic areas, the project delivers harmonized data, services, and tools that support the green transition, climate adaptation, and the sustainable management of geological resources across Europe.

A total of 49 Geological Surveys from 36 participating countries have joined the project, contributing to the development of a unified European geological information framework and, in the long term, to the establishment of a permanent Geological Service for Europe.

Through the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME), Greece participates in seven of the nine Work Packages (WPs) of the GSEU project, including Work Package 5 (WP5), which it coordinates as the lead partner.

WP5: “Coastal Vulnerability Assessment and Optimized Offshore Windfarm siting”

Within the framework of Work Package 5 (WP5): “Coastal Vulnerability Assessment and Optimized Offshore Windfarm siting”, coordinated by the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME), particular emphasis is placed on issues directly related to coastal vulnerability and climate change adaptation, including sea-level rise, vertical ground motion, long-term shoreline changes and the assessment of pressures and risks affecting European coastal areas.

In this context, the relevant activities include the development and application of geological and hydrogeological datasets, maps, models and decision-support tools. The objective is to improve our understanding of coastal vulnerability and contribute to the design of effective measures aimed at strengthening the resilience and climate adaptation of coastal areas across Europe.

Med-Gold

The main objective of the Med-Gold project is to transform climate-related information into added value for the traditional Mediterranean food systems based on grapevine, olive, and Mediterranean durum wheat. The project has co-developed its climate services with users, utilizing state-of-the-art climate data, with either modified existing tools, already well-known within the respective sectors, or  entirely new tools, developed from scratch.

The climate services for the agri-food sector will contribute in making  European agriculture and food systems more resilient, sustainable, and efficient in the face of climate change.

CCICH

The initiative “Addressing the impacts of climate change on natural and cultural heritage” is coordinated by Greece, with UNESCO, UNFCCC, and the WMO as partners. Its objectives are:

a) the establishment of an international network among the countries and international organizations supporting the initiative, as well as other global actors engaged in the protection of cultural and natural heritage from the climate change,

b) the creation of a database listing good practices in this field and

c) the management of relevant expertise, information.

LIFEASTI

LIFE ASTI contributes significantly to the generic goal of the EU Adaptation Strategy. It develops policies to improve the adaptation to the impact of the Urban Thermal Island effect, especially during the summer heatwaves. Thus, it reduces the risk in Metropolitan Areas by introducing prevention services and more effectively applying the EU guidelines about energy efficiency. For the representative geographil coverage of the problem, the evaluation of various environmental conditions, and the support of one of the most important EU priorities about the common effort and international cooperation, 2 Mediterranean cities were chosen.

Valorada

VALORADA aims to empower European prefectures and municipalities in directing the oncoming social reform to the climate sustainable and resilient development. The Project is aligned with the EU Adaptation Mission that aims to support the transformation of 150 EU regions to become climate sustainable and resilient by 2030, through:

  • accelerating social reforms,
  • demonstrating systemic reforms,
  • improving accessibility and usability of climate data.
