Operational Programme “Transport, Environment and Sustainable Development” (YMEPERAA) – Environment Sector
Climate change adaptation is a strategic objective of the programme’s Environment Sector. Key priorities include enhancing adaptability to climate change and the prevention, management, and restoration of damage caused by floods.
Flood protection planning (e.g. revision of flood risk management plans), infrastructure works (e.g. stream arrangement, urban flood control), inventory and monitoring systems for forested areas
Regional Operational Programmes by Region
The NSRF (Partnership Agreement for the Development Framework) includes 13 multi-sectoral and multi-fund Regional Operational Programmes (ROPs). Each Greek Region is covered by one regional programme, which includes regionally scaled projects and actions, leverages local advantages, and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF).
Procurement of equipment, flood protection projects (e.g. stream regulation), coastal erosion protection, observatories or systems for climate risk prevention/management (e.g. landslides, coastal erosion), water resource management projects (e.g. stormwater networks), development of Regional Climate Adaptation Plans (RCAPs), protection measures for cultural heritage sites
Natural Environment and Climate Resilience
Enhancing the Resilience of Natural Systems:
- Funding for restoration projects of natural ecosystems, such as forests and wetlands, which can absorb carbon and reduce vulnerability to extreme weather events.
Adaptation Measures:
- Actions for the prevention and management of natural hazards (e.g. wildfires, floods)
- Improvement of water resources management
- Promotion of sustainable agriculture and protection of coastal areas
- Interventions to enhance biodiversity
- Environmental awareness and education actions
- Sustainable natural resource management programmes
Understanding Risks:
- Assessment of the potential impacts of climate change across various sectors, such as agriculture, health, infrastructure and biodiversity.
Research and implementation actions in pilot projects, education and awareness-raising actions, capacity-building actions for public bodies.
