National Action Plan for the Balkan Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica) – LIFE-IP 4 NATURA

The Balkan chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica) is an important subspecies of European fauna, present in mountainous areas of mainland Greece, and with significant ecological value.

The species is listed in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC and is characterized by population isolation, habitat shrinkage, and human-induced pressures, such as poaching and habitat disturbance.

In the framework of Action A.1 of the LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project, a National Action Plan for the species was developed and enacted through a Ministerial Decision. This plan aims for:

• the mitigation of population reduction,
• the conservation and restoration of critical habitats,
• the strengthening of the institutional framework and monitoring,
• and the raising of awareness among local communities and rural stakeholders.

The plan includes actions for monitoring, scientific documentation, habitat protection, enhancement of collaborations, and public awareness.
