National Action Plan for the Conservation of the Species * Silene holzmannii-LIFE-IP 4 NATURA

Silene holzmannii is a narrow-range endemic, extremely rare, and endangered plant of Greece, with recorded presence only in small island areas of the southeastern Aegean.

The species is included in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC and Annex I of Presidential Decree 67/1981, and it is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) in the Red Data Book of the Greek Flora.

In the framework of the LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project, a National Action Plan was developed for the species and was enacted through a Ministerial Decision. The plan aims for:

• the prevention of species’ extinction,
• the protection and restoration of its habitats,
• the improvement of knowledge and the monitoring of the populations,
• the enhancement of the local awareness and participation.

Specific conservation and protection actions are foreseen, such as the delimitation of critical areas, pressures reduction, seed production, and population reinforcement, aiming to mitigate the declining trend.
