National Action Plan for the Apollo Butterfly (Parnassius apollo) – LIFE-IP 4 NATURA

As part of the LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project, the National Action Plan for the Apollo Butterfly (Parnassius apollo) has been developed and enacted through a Ministerial Decision.

This species of Lepidoptera is of EU interest, listed in Annex I of Directive 92/43/EEC. The plan aims for the protection and conservation of the butterfly, which faces threats such as land-use changes, erosion, grazing, and adverse climatic conditions.

The Action Plan includes:

• habitat management and improvement,
• reduction of pressures from human activities,
• scientific documentation and population monitoring,
• awareness-raising among local communities and management bodies,
• integration of accounting and legislation tools of conservation.

The implementation of the plan is based on cooperation between the Ministry of Environment and Energy, project partners, and public authorities, and is expected to support the recovery of populations within the Natura 2000 areas.
